Porto Tips

The best way to get to know Porto is to forget maps and just wander the streets. This is true especially in the old town, where a labyrinth of narrow, steep streets and stairs take you down to the river and up to different parts of town. The best views are from the top level of D. Luís Bridge, the riverside in Gaia, Miradouro São Bento da Vitória, and Passeio das Virtudes.Near D. Luís Bridge you'll find Sé do Porto and Santa Clara Church - both worth visiting - and Batalha Square, with one of the city's main theatre halls (Teatro Nacional de São João) and one of our favourite buildings, the Cinema da Batalha, which has recently reopened and where you’ll find a beautiful mural by Portuguese painter Júlio Pomar which was thought to have been lost forever.Gaia is worth a visit for mainly two reasons: to look at Porto 🤭 and to visit Port wine cellars. We would advise either Grahams (great tours and awesome views) or Sandeman (also good tours and easier access).Miradouro São Bento da Vitória and Passeio das Virtudes (grab a beer and tremoços at the corner ‘tasco’ and take them to the grassed area at sunset 🤩) are close to each other and to a bunch of other things like Clérigos Tower and Centro de Fotografia do Porto (an old prison). Close by you’ll find yummy eclairs at Leitaria da Quinta do Passo, drinks at Aduela or Candelabro and great sushi at Mood or Subenshi.Rua Miguel Bombarda and R. do Rosário are great for shopping (especially art/crafts/local stuff). Rua da Picaria and Rua das Flores/Largo São Domingos are probably the best places to go if you are at a loss on what to eat.The best Francesinha is at Bufete Fase (a tiny bit out of the way, but worth it - they only take cash!) and another safe option is Brasão (several locations). The best Pastéis de Nata are at Aquarela. If you have time, walk by the river from Ribeira to Foz (where the Douro meets the Atlantic). It is a long walk (or you could cycle), but totally worth it, especially if you time it to arrive at sunset.

Foz is a nice area to again wander around the labyrinthine old streets. To eat here we would advise Casa Vasco for Portuguese small plates with a twist. Other great restaurants in the area are Casa Pasto da Palmeira (same as above), Nhac Nhac (pizza) and Terra (sushi).Palácio de Cristal, Casa da Música, and Serralves (both the gardens, villa with a permanent Miró exhibition, and contemporary art museum) are all worth a visit. If you can only visit one, we’d recommend Serralves.Things that in our opinion are not worth a visit, especially if you are pressed for time, are the botanical gardens (you can't get into the glasshouses without a student pass and it's right by a freeway, so it's really noisy), and Lello bookshop (it's beautiful, but the crowds make it unbearable).Other things to see: São Bento Station, Rua Santa Catarina, Avenida dos Aliados, Jardim das Virtudes, Parque da Cidade, Matosinhos (for grilled fish, the new cruise terminal, more beaches and shopping, though things are a bit more spread out), and Piscina das Marés.
Other places to eat:
One of Porto's most famous 'tasca', Casa Guedes, serves a mouth-watering pork and cheese sandwich (now a chain but still good)
Gazela - hotdogs with a twist, Rua de Entreparedes
Cantina 32 - Rua das Flores
Puro 4050 - Rua das Flores
Euskalduna - Rua do Bomfim (pricey and will need to be booked well in advance - they received their 1st Michelin star in 2022) euskaldunastudio.pt
Espaço 77 - very good and varied Rissois and it’s in Travessa de Cedofeita, where you’ll also find lots of cute shops for such a small street
Catraio - craft beers, Rua de Cedofeita
Izakaya Japanese Cuisine - also pricier, also book in advance
If you want more specific recommendations you can always ask us, the list is endless 🫶
